Two days is a long time to go without food. What happens on the weekends to children in our school system who are regularly fed by the Pinellas County schools breakfast and lunch programs? A lot of them go hungry! That’s why Pack-a-Snack was created.
We started our program a year ago with 12 children receiving our Pack-a-Snacks. Over the last year, our number has grown to 43 children as of 2018 at Curlew Creek Elementary School, where we provide Pack-a-Snacks on a weekly basis. Our hope is to reach even more children, with your support.
Every child deserves to thrive. The physical and psychological effects of returning to school on Monday with an empty stomach is nothing short of heartbreaking. This is where Pack-a-Snack comes to the rescue. It bridges the food gap so kids can be fortified with nourishment even when school is not in session. Each Pack-a-Snack contains at least 12 items to ensure that the children have food to sustain them over the weekend.
What is contained in a Pack-a-Snack? Packed items include shelf stable milk, juice boxes, pudding, Vienna sausage, ravioli, Tuna Salad, , animal cookies, peanut butter crackers, cheese crackers, granola bars, granola breakfast rounds, fruit snacks, cereal, and peanuts or peanut butter.
Our church has an anonymous benefactor who provides the food every week, but we still need your help. You can help stop weekend hunger by providing helping hands to stuff food items into our Pack-a-Snacks. It is a wonderful feeling knowing that you are packing a child’s weekend food supply!
We pack our snacks on Wednesdays at 10:00am, so we can deliver them on Thursday at 10:00am to Curlew Creek Elementary School in time to go home with the children on Fridays. If you have some time on Wednesday or Thursday mornings and would like to help, please call the church office at 727-784-3424.
